5G Connected Fields: Rugged Gateways for Autonomous Agriculture

The Challenge: Remote Supervision in Harsh Field Conditions

Large agricultural sites need reliable connectivity for remote supervision, machine status, camera feeds, and field data. Remote locations, dust, direct sunlight, and irregular vehicle power make standard IT equipment difficult to maintain.

Critical requirements included:

  • Reliable 5G Backhaul: Sending live video and telemetry from field equipment to an operations center.
  • Thermal Resilience: Operating inside vehicle cabins or field enclosures exposed to heat, dust, and vibration.
  • Wide-Range Power: Handling irregular power profiles from heavy agricultural machinery.

The Solution: YT-IGN800 and YX-E 500 Integration

This project used a dual-tier computing strategy by Yantronic:

  1. YX-E 500: Installed in the vehicle to process local path planning, GPS fusion, and obstacle detection workloads.
  2. YT-IGN800: Used as an industrial 5G gateway between field equipment and the remote operations layer.

Why Yantronic Industrial Hardware?

  • Integrated 5G/LTE: External antenna support and dual-SIM options help improve connectivity continuity in field deployments.
  • Sealed Chassis Design: Fanless construction reduces exposure to dust and agricultural particles.
  • Wide DC Input: Industrial power support simplifies integration with vehicle electrical systems.

Technical Architecture

  • Sensor Layer: Camera arrays and GPS-RTK units feed visual and positional data into the vehicle compute node.
  • Communication Layer: The gateway sends telemetry and video streams over cellular networks where coverage is available.
  • Monitoring: Remote staff can review equipment status, video feeds, and operational alerts from a central interface.

Engineering Outcomes

  • Remote Visibility: Field equipment could report status and video data without relying on local operators at every vehicle.
  • Deployment Continuity: Rugged power and enclosure design reduced the need for fragile consumer networking equipment.
  • Scalable Architecture: The same gateway-and-compute pattern can be applied across vehicles, pumps, and remote field infrastructure.
